The Berlin version of a poor man’s steak, currywurst is not only a popular German street food, it has begun to reach international fame. It may be easy for some to walk down the street whenever they get the craving, but if that isn't the case where you're living, you can make currywurst at home with this simple recipe.
Ingredients
14.5 oz canned diced tomatoes
1 tbl. butter
1 small white onion, finely chopped
2 tbl. curry powder
1 tbl. paprika (sweet or spicy depending on your taste)
1 tsp. sugar
1 tbl. apple cider vinegar (optional)
salt to taste
bratwurst, bockwurst, knockwurst or rindswurst
brötchen (german bread roll) or fries
Instructions
Cook the onions in butter over medium heat for 8-10 mins until transparent.
Meanwhile, puree the canned tomato until smooth.
When the onions are ready, add the spices to the pan and toast lightly for a minute until fragrant.
Add the puréed tomato, sugar and vinegar to the onion and spice mixture and simmer over medium heat for approximately 20 minutes.
When the sauce is almost ready, grill or broil the sausages until cooked through and slice into ½ inch slices.
Once the currywurst sauce has thickened, season with salt to taste and serve over the sliced sausage, sprinkled with a little extra curry powder and accompanied by bread rolls or fries.
