Did you know that, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, around 1.3 billion tons of food are thrown away per year? At the same time, current statistics indicate that 842 million people are suffering from chronic hunger.
Consider the following statistics; as of 2008, 13% of the world population was chronically hungry, while, according to the World Health Organization, 35% of adults worldwide were overweight, of which 11% were obese. That means for roughly every two people, one is healthy, and the other is not. Pretty sad statistics when we aren’t even taking into consideration those with chronic diseases, hereditary disorders or, even worse, terminal illnesses.
We Have Already Ignored Hunger & Waste Issues for too Long
ParTASTE cares about the world we live in as well as the people living in it with us. Ignoring hunger and waste issues is a nasty habit, and it’s one we want to kick. It’s as easy to throw away food when no one’s looking as it is to eat a second piece of cake in the middle of the night, sneak out for a smoke, or do anything else that your conscience tells you not to but that no one holds you accountable for. Repeating a bad habit gets harder and harder when other people are counting on you to break the habit. Most people reading this are too removed from hunger and food waste issues to feel direct accountability, so let’s hold each other accountable.
We are looking for someone who wants to take the lead on our effort to become a resource and support system for everyone who wants to reduce the amount of food they waste and become more aware of what can be done to help the chronically hungry. If you are passionate about inspiring people to take responsibility for the role they play, as individuals, in food waste and hunger problems, we want to hear from you!
