Apfelstrudel is a thin, crisp, buttery pastry wrapped around a luscious apple-cinnamon filling. Even if you have never tried it before it, the warming, spiced flavors of apfelstrudel will taste familiar. A seasonal dish which manages to be simple and exquisite simultaneously, apfelstrudel is popular in both Austria and Germany; it is typically served with custard or vanilla ice-cream and is a common menu item in cafes and restaurants in both countries. Although originating in Vienna, apfelstrudel has been lovingly adopted, by home cooks and commercially, as a favorite pastry in Germany.

Where to find apfelstrudel

Berlin: Enjoy homemade Austrian-style specialties in a historic setting at the Cafe Einstein Stammhaus Restaurant and Gardens or opt for a more urban, artsy experience at Kaffeehaus Einstein, a stones throw away from the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate.

Munich: For Viennese coffeehouse culture, a relaxed atmosphere and live music in an elegant setting, head to Café am Beethovenplatz, Munich’s oldest Konzertcafé.

Vienna: Vienna has no shortage of turn-of-the-century cafes with aloof waitstaff, lots of coffee and freshly made pastries, but Café Prückel, founded in 1904, is the only Kaffeehaus in Vienna that transports you back to the 1950s. This mid-century style hangout hosts mostly locals and students who come for the leisurely ambience, cultural events and live piano playing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.
